What is microdermabrasion for stretch marks?

Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure used to make the skin appear smoother. It involves placing a device with a rough crystal or diamond tip on the skin to buff away the outer layer.

The procedure can be done at home, in a spa or by a clinician, and usually takes multiple sessions before for results to be visible. It’s considered safe for most skin types and tones when done properly.

Microdermabrasion is commonly used on the face to ease the signs of ageing and acne, but can also be applied to other parts of the body to reduce stretch marks. However, it’s not guaranteed to completely remove stretch marks, especially deep or mature ones.

How does microdermabrasion for stretch marks work?

The power of microdermabrasion hinges on the function of the epidermis – our skin’s outer layer.

The science behind it

Stretch marks happen when your skin is pulled further than it’s used to, tearing the elastic fibres that help your skin to bounce back. Microdermabrasion uses tiny exfoliating crystals to remove dead skin cells from the affected area, allowing new, healthier cells – with working elastic fibres – to take their place.

Microdermabrasion can also help stimulate collagen production. This natural protein can improve your skin’s elasticity and make your stretch marks thinner and less noticeable.

Before the treatment

It’s a good idea to consult a dermatologist on whether microdermabrasion is the best treatment for your stretch marks.

A week before the treatment. Avoid waxing or shaving the area to help minimise any irritation, limit sun exposure and avoid other treatments during this time, such as chemical peels. It’s also good to stop smoking to help blood circulation.

On the day of the treatment. Keep your stretch marks free of creams or make up. You can use a fragrance-free soap.

During the treatment

Microdermabrasion is minimally invasive and requires no downtime. Each session takes around 30 to 60 minutes.

  1. Get comfortable – you’ll be asked to change into a gown and lie on the bed, with the treatment area uncovered..
  2. Cleanse and exfoliate – the clinician will prep the skin and apply the device, either by firing micro-fine crystals onto your skin or using a diamond-tipped wand.
  3. Dead cells are removed – once the top layer of your skin is buffed, the device will suck up the dead skin cells to leave a smooth surface.

Aftercare

After the procedure, your skin will be a little tender – patients have compared the feeling to sunburn. This usually doesn’t last longer than a few days.

  • Use sunscreen – microdermabrasion leaves the area with a fresh layer of skin, which won’t have the same protection from the sun. It’s particularly important to use sunscreen daily for a week or so after your treatment.
  • Moisturise – this helps keep your skin hydrated and promotes its elasticity and strength. This can help the results of your treatment last longer and stop stretch marks appearing so easily in future.
  • Let it heal – while your skin is healing, it may feel itchy and hot. It’s important not to scratch or irritate the area. Avoid harsh chemicals, waxing and laser treatment for at least a fortnight afterwards.

Alternative treatments

There are alternatives to microdermabrasion for stretch marks, including:

  • Microneedling – this procedure uses tiny needles to puncture your skin, causing it to repair itself. This produces more collagen and elastic fibres.
  • Creams – topical creams and retinols can help lighten your stretch marks over time.
  • Laser therapy – uses beams of light to penetrate the skin, causing your stretch marks to heal and blend in with your normal skin tone.
