How much is a hair transplant?

The most common reason for having a transplant is male pattern baldness, where hair loss is passed down through genetics. But it can also be an option for women with thinning hair too.

When it comes to hair transplant costs:

  • The average cost of a hair transplant typically ranges from 13,500 AED to 40,000 AED in the UAE.
  • The size of the bald area and the number of follicles to be transplanted usually determines the cost of the treatment.

  • The type of surgery you choose also affects the cost – and there are currently two main options: FUT and FUE.

  • Clinic choice is another important factor – the more prestigious the clinic or experienced the clinician, the higher the price will likely be. You should always seek out a qualified, skilled practitioner for any procedure, but this is one where, like a good hairdresser, experience really does matter.

What is included in hair transplant surgery costs?

Before the treatment

A doctor will explain everything in an initial consultation, show you how your hair may change a few years down the line and – crucially – give you time to think and consider your options. You can also discuss overall pricing at this stage.

Finding the right clinic means everything. You may be tempted by lower cost clinics looking to get you in for hair transplant surgery as quickly as possible but prices that look too good to be true, generally are.

During the surgery

First, your doctor will clean your scalp and shave the affected area. You’ll then be given local anaesthetic and the transplant will get underway. Small sections of skin or individual hairs will be removed and grafted into place in the hairless area.

The amount of hairs being moved, and the actual technique being used will affect the total hair transplant cost.

You’ll likely be awake during the operation, and you should go home the same day. If, however, you are required or request to stay in the clinic overnight, this may be added on to the price.

Your head will be bandaged, and those bandages need to stay in place for 24 hours. Your doctor may advise you to take some time off work, usually at least three to seven days.

There are two main types of surgery:

  • FUT – follicular unit transplantation.
  • FUE – follicular unit extraction.

With FUT, your doctor will remove a thin section of skin from the back of your head, split this into pieces, and then embed the grafts into tiny incisions made in the hairless area of your scalp. Only the area that is being treated will need to be shaved.

With FUE, your doctor will remove individual hairs from the back of the head rather than sections, before individual hair grafts are then embedded into your scalp, one by one.

FUE is generally more expensive than FUT, because it takes more time to remove and graft individual hairs rather than skin sections – and the process can be more complex.

Discuss with your doctor which is most relevant for your needs and expectations.
