Sculptra – how the treatment works and what it can help with

By now, you may be aware of the benefits of fillers. The non-toxic injectables are great at smoothening fine lines and wrinkles, reducing the appearance of acne scars, defining lips, and even contouring the chin and nose.

The most well-known filler is hyaluronic acid, which revives a natural-looking firmness to the skin and hydrates from within, but when it comes to noticeable volumizing, as well encouraging the production of collagen, Sculptra is the go-to.

But is it the right treatment for you? And what are the benefits over other types of filler?

Find a clinic or practitioner near you and enjoy a risk-free booking process thanks to free in-clinic consultations and the option to pay in-clinic. Also, you can now split the cost of your treatment into four equal, interest-free instalments using Tabby.

What is Sculptra?

Sculptra Aesthetic is the brand name for poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a synthetic dermal filler comprised of the same lactic acid that occurs naturally in the body.

The beauty of Sculptra over other fillers is that not only does it add significant volume, but it also encourages the production of collagen at the same time.

The process is believed to be safer and more customisable than other procedures such as fat transfer, as the results are progressive and last longer.

How does Sculptra work?

The science behind it

As an injectable poly-L-Lactic acid, Sculptra helps to increase the volume of the skin by activating the natural collagen cycle. Therefore, it is injected deeper into the dermis that other fillers. And rather than increasing the volume of the injection area immediately, the liquid is absorbed by the skin and dissipates over 48 hours for long-term rejuvenation of the face.

Also, unlike other fillers, you will need more than one session for the PLLA to work properly and replace the collagen over time.

Before the treatment

  • Find practitioners near you with our clinical locator/listings.
  • Have a consultation to discuss your desired results.
  • You may be asked to stop taking specific medication.

During the treatment

Your practitioner will cleanse the intended injection areas and may also use a topical anaesthetic to help with any minor discomfort as it’s injected deeper than other fillers.

Aftercare for Sculptra fillers is minimal. You may experience some slight swelling of the area, but this will fade quickly as the liquid dissolves. You should avoid direct sunlight until the swelling has died down and apply a cold pack for a few minutes within the first day of treatment. It might initially appear as if no work has been done, but the results will emerge a few weeks after the treatment.

If there are no complications, you should be able to wear makeup several hours after your treatment.

What can Sculptra treat?

Sculptra for acne scars

Acne scars can form crater-like shapes on the surface of the skin or small, deep holes that look like punctures. Rolling scars are caused by scar tissue that forms under the skin and gives the skin a rolling and uneven appearance. These scars can be filled using Sculptra to create a more even skin surface.

Sculptra as a cellulite treatment

Cellulite also causes the skin to become uneven, and Sculptra can improve this texture by filling the dimples to make the skin firmer and smoother. With the right treatment schedule, Sculptra can banish the appearance of cellulite in target areas.

Sculptra as a facial filler

This is the most common use for Sculptra and is highly effective when tackling facial wrinkles. It’s usually used to treat nasolabial folds, or the lines that form between the nose and the mouth.

However, it shouldn’t be used on the lips or eyes. As the skin here is much thinner and more delicate, any bumps that might form due to Sculptra’s volumising capacity will be more apparent.

It is also used to combat lipoatrophy (loss of fat during antiretroviral treatment) in patients with HIV or anyone who has lost significant volume in their face due to illness.
