How laser liposuction works and the potential benefits

It can be hard to lose fat around the abdomen, legs, arms or chin which is why so many people turn to liposuction for a helping hand, with it ranking in the top five cosmetic surgeries in 2020.

Laser liposuction is a great alternative to traditional lipo that works by melting away fat and tightening the skin. But how exactly does it work?

Find a clinic or practitioner near you and enjoy a risk-free booking process thanks to free in-clinic consultations and the option to pay in-clinic. Also, you can now split the cost of your treatment into four equal, interest-free instalments using Tabby.

What is laser liposuction?

Laser liposuction combines laser lipolysis – the melting of fat – with liposuction. It is less invasive than traditional liposuction and can be more effective too.

How does laser liposuction for fat removal work?

The science behind it

Laser lipolysis works by liquefying fat and tightening the skin with a fibre-optic laser.

With one wavelength, the laser heats up and destroys subcutaneous fat cells. This also releases stubborn deposits of fat. Meanwhile, a second wavelength stimulates the production of collagen to tighten up the skin.

The liquified fat is then gently removed with a cannula not unlike traditional liposuction.

Before the treatment

If you have decided on laser liposuction, you should use our listings to look for a qualified, licensed practitioner. At your consultation you can discuss whether laser liposuction is the right choice, or if a different option might help you achieve better results.

If your procedure is targeting abdominal fat, you will need to avoid food for a few hours beforehand.

During the treatment

The procedure will last about an hour and will follow a few simple steps.

  1. Your clinician will numb the area with a local anaesthetic.
  2. They will then make a small incision and apply the laser.
  3. After this, your clinician will insert a small cannula to gently remove the fat.

As this is a minimally invasive procedure, you won’t need much recovery time. Your doctor will recommend a few days off work and a few weeks off strenuous exercise. You may want to arrange for some help with everyday activities until you feel more comfortable.

It’s normal to have some bruising, redness and tightness to the skin initially but this should fade over the next few days.

Other side effects are rare, but can include:

  • Lumpy tissue.
  • Infection.
  • Tissue necrosis.
  • Numbness.
  • Loose skin.

If you do experience any of the above, get in contact with your practitioner for advice.

Alternative treatments

Laser liposuction isn’t the best treatment option for everyone. Of course, eating healthy and exercising should be attempted first before looking at surgical options. But after that, here are some alternatives you can try.

Traditional liposuction has a key advantage over laser as it has more immediate results. However, it is far more invasive and can result in loose skin afterwards, along with having a much longer downtime. As traditional liposuction involves general anaesthesia, it is often considerably more expensive too.

Another option is Cryolipolysis – often called by its brand name CoolSculpting. This non-invasive procedure freezes fat, killing off the cells and allowing the body to slowly remove them naturally via the liver. It’s designed to sculpt certain areas to help you create your desired body shape. You’ll have to wait longer to see results, but it’s much cheaper than laser liposuction – often costing around 14,700 AED.

This process breaks up fat deposits in the body using ultrasound technology. It works in a similar way to CoolSculpting as the fat cells are then slowly expelled from the body naturally overtime. You will need multiple treatments to see results, and each session costs around 2,500 AED.

Mesotherapy is another alternative where injections containing vitamins, minerals, enzymes and hormones are injected into the skin helping to remove excess fat. It’s considerably cheaper than liposuction per session but sometimes up to 10 sessions are required in order to see results. Sessions start at around 950 AED.
