What is cryolipolysis?

Cryolipolysis is the clinical term for any fat freezing procedure. Cryo means cold, lipo means fat, and lysis means destruction.

The most well-known treatments are CoolSculpting and CoolTech. Both are brands of cryolipolysis devices and work in the same way; CoolSculpting is developed by Zeltic Aesthetics, while CoolTech is by Cocoon Medical.

How does the Cryolipolysis procedure work?

The science behind it

Adipocytes are the name for connective tissue cells that store fat, including subcutaneous fat. This is the stubborn kind of fat that is difficult to shift on the stomach, legs, arms, and chin.

These types of cells are highly susceptible to cold. Cryolipolysis uses low temperatures to cut off their oxygen, breaks them down and forces them to release their stores of fat.

Before the treatment

Your clinician should have either CoolSculpting, CoolTech or ISO 13485 certified cryolipolysis devices.

At your consultation, they will explain more about the treatment, make some assessments and outline how many sessions you’ll need and confirm a cost.

During the treatment

Your clinician will apply a vacuum-like nozzle to the target area – which can cause a slightly uncomfortable tugging feeling at first. But the vacuum will soon get cold, and the area will feel numb. This process will last around 30 minutes to an hour.

Aftercare

There might be a little tightness and soreness straight after the procedure, but there are very few side-effects to cryolipolysis. You’ll be fine to resume work, exercise, and any other activities the same day.

How much does cryolipolysis cost? Plus, other things you need to know

What is the cost of cryolipolysis treatments?

Cryolipolysis treatments should cost around 3,000 AED for a small area like the upper arm. This can increase to around 14,700 AED for a CoolSculpting procedure.

What results can I expect?

After four to six months, the fat in your target area should have decreased by around 20 to 30 per cent.

Areas with larger amounts of fat may take longer, so your clinician may recommend further procedures to get the results you want.

Alternatives

If you don’t think this treatment is right for you, there are a few alternatives you can try, including:

  • Ultrasonic cavitation

Ultrasonic cavitation uses ultrasound waves to break up fat deposits in the body. These are then turned to liquid and expelled by the body’s lymphatic system gradually. It should cost around 2,500 AED for a session – but you may need multiple treatments to get the best results.

  • Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy is another non-invasive procedure, consisting of a series of injections of enzymes, vitamins, hormones and even plant extracts to fade wrinkles and lines, and tighten skin. The process helps to break down fat cells gradually.

Liposuction is the most common and expensive surgical procedure for fat removal. Your clinician will insert a cannula into your target area and remove fat using a gentle suction device. Its results are reliable and long-lasting, but you’ll need to take time to recover afterwards, and it can have more significant side effects.

Cryolipolysis facts

  • Subcutaneous fat cells help the body respond to low temperatures by heating up and burning calories of their own accord.
  • We carry both ‘brown’ and ‘white’ fat. White fat can contribute to disorders like diabetes, whereas brown fat helps fight them.
  • Cryolipolysis was inspired by an ice lolly. Scientists realised that freezing temperatures could selectively damage small pockets of fat cells in the cheek.
