Body contouring - what it is and how it works

Achieving the shape we desire is never as easy as eat less, move more. You can’t spot lose from a specific area of your body, no matter how hard you try.

That’s where body contouring can help.

Body contouring is a catch-all term for several different types of treatment that target tricky pockets of fat and tighten excess skin.

So, could a body sculpting treatment work for you?

Find a clinic or practitioner near you and enjoy a risk-free booking process thanks to free in-clinic consultations and the option to pay in-clinic. Also, you can now split the cost of your treatment into four equal, interest-free instalments using Tabby.

What is body contouring?

Body contouring, also known as body sculpting, works by using lasers, extremely cold temperatures, and acid injections to remove fat and shape the body. The term covers all the treatments that target fat cell, such as CoolSculpting, ultrasonic cavitation and mesotherapy.

Other branded options include Velashape, SculpSure and LPG endermologie.

The treatments are most suitable for those who are close to their target weight as they’re often used to target troublesome fatty tissue in areas where it is hard to lose naturally, such as on the hips or stomach.

How does the body contouring procedure work?

The science behind it

Using non-invasive lasers, ultrasound, high-frequency radio waves, or extreme temperature regulation, body contouring breaks up fat at a cellular level, dissolving fatty deposits. But whatever exact method you use, you’ll need several sessions of the treatment to see results.

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting (also known as cryolipolysis) uses freezing technology to freeze fat cells, without harming any of the other surrounding cells. These cells are then expelled naturally by the body gradually via the lymphatic system. Each session takes between half an hour and an hour depending on the size of the area being treated.

Ultrasonic cavitation

Lasers are used during ultrasonic cavitation to turn fat cells into liquid. This permanently kills the cells which are then expelled from the body naturally in the following twelve weeks after the procedure. Each session takes around 25 minutes.

Mesotherapy

An alternative fat removal treatment which uses the injection of hormones, enzymes, vitamins, and plant extracts to remove fat cells from the body and rejuvenate the skin overtime. Sessions take around 15 minutes.

Treatment lowdown

All non-invasive forms of body contouring are painless so you shouldn’t experience any major discomfort during the procedures.

Body contouring usually has no downtime so you should be able to return to your daily activities straight away. Some people, rarely, have a little swelling or soreness.

You may need to return to the clinician for future procedures, depending on how much fat you’d like to reduce. On average, you might need between six and 12 sessions spaced out over a couple of weeks to see the full effects of your body contouring procedure.

How much does body contouring cost? Plus, other things you need to know

Before you decide whether body contouring is for you, compare costs, results, and alternatives.

What is the cost of body contouring treatments?

Body contouring can cost between 1,000 AED and 10,000 AED, depending on the level of treatment required.

What results can I expect?

After you’ve completed your sessions, you might have to wait a few months to see any noticeable results. This is because the body needs to heal cells and repair skin. However, as the body recovers, your skin will be tighter, and cells will have much lower levels of fatty deposits.

Alternatives

There are a few alternative methods of tackling that stubborn body fat if you feel the treatment isn’t right for you but the most effective involves surgery.

Liposuction

Liposuction is by far the most popular fat removal procedure in the world. It’s an invasive treatment and works by using a cannula and a suction device to remove fat deposits from different areas of the body. It is much more expensive than non-surgical body contouring treatments and requires a few weeks downtime afterwards to recover, but results are often achieved almost immediately.
