How to plan your pre-event treatments
We all want to feel good for a special occasion – but, sometimes, getting to feel our best can be pretty complex. Booking your favourite treatments – not to mention incorporating any new ones – can feel like one big, baffling beauty puzzle as you try to coordinate downtime and your finished result with the big day.
In the wrong order, even the best combination can have disastrous consequences. Take fillers, Botox, and microdermabrasion. Scheduling fillers or Botox one week after microdermabrasion? Totally fine. But scheduling microdermabrasion the day after you receive fillers or Botox? You might end up unintentionally shifting product and altering your finished result – and not for the better.

When should I book my treatments?
Six months before the event
Depending on your hair type, laser hair removal can make a huge difference in just one session. However, it takes an average of six – each spaced four to six weeks apart – for lasers to fully destroy the pigment in your hair follicles and get your final result.
For that reason, we recommend starting at least six months before a special occasion if you’re hoping to go (mostly) hairless. If you’re looking to go for your first session in the immediate run-up to the event, be realistic with your expectations – and remember that skin can look red or irritated for a few days. Also, note that it will need at least two weeks to recover before any treatments can be performed in the same area.
Non-invasive body sculpting methods such as cryolipolysis, cavitation, BodyTite, or Velashape don’t come with the same lengthy downtime as liposuction, but don’t mistake them for a quick fix. Depending on the amount and location of the fat you’re trying to shift – and the method you choose – you’ll need anywhere between one and four sessions, and it can take months before there’s any visible improvement.
If you’re also undergoing laser hair removal, you’ll want to wait a week or so before you potentially irritate the skin further.
Two months before the event
The appearance of your skin is tied up in the health of your skin barrier. Keeping this protective layer strong not only boosts hydration but gives you a solid starting point before you undertake any other skin treatments – reducing the chances of a poor reaction.
To strengthen this barrier at a cellular level, phototherapy uses specific wavelengths of different coloured LED lights to stimulate collagen production, boost circulation, and reduce inflammation. If you’re a chemical peel newbie, you probably don’t want to try dissolving your skin with acid for the first time a week before a special event. Although it only takes a week to heal from the redness and swelling of a superficial peel, having your first peel two months prior gives you a chance to see how skin reacts.
Once it’s exfoliated away the dead skin cells, you should be left with a clearer, glowing complexion for up to two months – and when you know how long it takes your skin to recover, you can repeat the process again closer to the day.
Instead of using chemicals to buff away the build-up of dead skin cells, dirt, and bacteria, microdermabrasion relies on crystals. It only leaves skin red for 48 hours – but, again, we don’t recommend leaving it until the last minute, as it’s not uncommon for the first session of physical exfoliation to trigger a brief breakout. Scheduling your first session (not just of microdermabrasion, but any kind of facial) two months in advance gives you some leeway, just in case.
Looking to treat your hyperpigmentation, fine lines, blemishes, or scarring with laser? This alone can produce significant results after just one session and can even be combined with a chemical peel one week prior for maximum impact. Depending on the strength of the laser used, you might experience some redness, itching, and swelling after your session. This is usually resolved within a couple of weeks, but you’ll need to wait at least two before you undergo any injectable treatments.
The month of the event
A month before the event, you’re good to go for Botox. Just remember that it won’t work as well if it’s injected after anything that causes swelling, as it might not stay in its intended position. Undergoing skin treatments directly after Botox can also cause issues, as pushing or pressing on the skin too soon after it’s administered can interfere with its effectiveness. Some people see results in as little as three days, but it generally takes up to three weeks. One month gives it plenty of time to kick in.
Some practitioners will happily administer Botox and fillers at the same time, but sometimes it’s best to leave two weeks between sessions – especially if you’re wanting both to treat signs of ageing. This gives Botox a chance to relax the muscles and make it clear where you need filler.
If you’re just getting fillers, scheduling your appointment two weeks before an event gives the swelling time to go down. Filler migration is rare but give other skin treatments a rest in the meantime to keep the odds to a minimum.

Long-term results require around six sessions, but as you can see a difference after just the one it can also be used as a quick glow-booster a few days before an event.
